Umrah

Umrah is an act of spiritual purity for a Muslim who wants to perform it to earn the pleasure of Allah (SWT). It is a way to purify mind and soul, and provides inspiration for a lifetime.

Allah (SWT) gives a reward for every good deed performed in his way and when a believer spends his time and wealth for His sake, He saves him from mishap and misery. Blessings of performing Umrah are immense.

According to a Hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA), Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said,

“Perform Hajj and Umrah consecutively; for they remove poverty and sin as bellows removes impurity from iron.”

“Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous Umrah.”

One of the other benefits of performing Umrah is that a pilgrim also gets a chance to visit Madinah- the city of our beloved Prophet (pbuh), and do ziyarat of all the places related to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his companions including Mosque Quba, Masjid-e-Nabawi and Jannat-ul-Baqi.

Now that you have made up your mind to perform Umrah, you should acknowledge the nature of the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon you and how fortunate you are to be called to the House of Allah. Be grateful for the opportunity that occurred in time and you are able to afford it.

Preparation of Umrah

PROCEDURE

Comb your hair, shape the beard, trim your moustache, cut your nails, and remove unwanted body hair.

Take a bath with the intention of Ihram / otherwise do wudu (Ablution).

Wear Ihram garments. Offer two rakats of nafl for Ihram.

Declare your intention saying: “O Allah! I intend to perform umrah. So, accept it from me and make it easy for me, Ameen.” Immediately recite the words of Talbiyah three times and as often as possible. Men should say it in a loud voice, but women should say it in a subdued tone.

PROHIBITIONS OF IHRAM

After making the intention and reciting the Talbiyah, you will be in the state of Ihram and from this time onward you should not perform any action that is forbidden in Ihram, forbidden acts include:

Covering the head (men), covering the face (women). Covering the middle bone of the upper part of the feet (Both men and women). Shaving and or clipping hair. Cutting nails. Using perfume.

Wearing ordinary clothes (men) / Women can wear their ordinary clothes. Hunting or killing an animal. Intercourse.

Labbayka Allāhumma Labbayk. Labbayk Lā Sharīka Laka Labbayk. Inna l-Ḥamda, Wa n-Niʻmata, Laka wal Mulk, Lā Sharīka Lak

Umrah Rituals at a Glance

Umrah is similar to Hajj but can be performed at any time.

Unlike Hajj, Umrah rituals are shorter and simpler.

These are the essential steps of Umrah:

Enter into Ihram (state of purity and devotion) by washing your body and wearing the Ihram garments.

Recite the Talbiyah at the miqat station to declare intention to make the pilgrimage.

Travel to Makkah

Enter Al Masjid Al Haram (Holy Mosque) and perform Tawaf – circling the Kaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.

Perform Sa’ai – walking 7 times between the hills of Safa and Marwah beside the Kaba.

At the end of Umrah, men come out of ihram by shaving their head (taqseer) or trimming. Completing Umrah for women requires cutting off a short lock of hair.
